A History of Flanagan Public Library
The story of the Flanagan Public Library District is one of community, generosity, and a shared belief in the importance of having a public library to call our own. Today, the library has grown far beyond those first shelves of donated books. It is a place where children discover the joy of reading, neighbors gather for programs and conversation, patrons access books and technology, and people of all ages can learn, create, and connect. As we celebrate how far we have come, we remain grateful to everyone who helped turn an empty bank building into something entirely new—a library built by the community, for the community. Once a bank. Now a library. Always a place for our community.
Humble Beginnings
The journey began in 2013, when a former bank building was generously donated with a new purpose in mind—to become a public library for the Flanagan community. What had once served as a place of banking and business would soon begin an exciting transformation into a welcoming space for books, learning, technology, programs, and community connection.

Donations Galore
Over the next several years, the building underwent extensive remodeling as the vision for the library gradually became a reality. But creating a library from scratch required more than a building—it needed books to fill the shelves.
That is where the community stepped in.
Boxes upon boxes of donated books began arriving from local residents who believed in the vision and wanted to be part of bringing it to life. Each donation helped build the library's first collection and represented the tremendous support of a community eager to have a public library of its own.
A New Start
In 2016, after years of planning, remodeling, hard work, and community support, the Flanagan Public Library District officially opened its doors.
Unlike libraries with histories stretching back generations, Flanagan's library was built from the ground up, making it one of the newer public libraries established from scratch in the state of Illinois.
